H.H. 17th Karmapa commemorates 40 years of work for Buddhism of Lama Ole Nydahl

H.H. 17th Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje and Lama Ole Nydahl

2012 marks the 40-year anniversary of Lama Ole Nydahl’s work in bringing Diamond Way Buddhism to the West. Since Lama Ole and his late wife Hannah Nydahl were asked by their teacher, the great meditation master H.H. 16th Karmapa, to teach Buddhism in the West, more than 630 Diamond Way Buddhist centers have been started.

On Thursday 9th August, H.H. 17th Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje, leader of the Karma Kagyu school, had dinner with Lama Ole Nydahl and more than 3,000 of their students at the Europe Center in Germany, the main center of Diamond Way Buddhism. Relaxed as always, and with a warm smile, H.H. 17th Karmapa gave a heartfelt speech about his close student and friend Lama Ole:

“Tonight is a very special night, not just because we are all here. We are here to celebrate something that has been a history. So, to celebrate something like that is always a good thing, so therefore I think here we would all like to thank and show our gratitude for the last 40 years of spreading the Buddha-dharma across the world, giving refuge, giving Phowa, and teaching Ngöndro, and bringing all of you together as a big family – a harmonious family, a family of practitioners. So therefore I would like to mention and say that it is all happening – due to him. And of course… so, we know how strong he is, both physically and mentally, but there’s so much work to be done. So from my part, I’m also sure from your part as well, I would like to wish a very very long life, a strong life, so that you may continue to develop this wonderful ground of Buddhism and to make it accessible throughout the world. So, may the blessings of our lineage, and the blessing of my teachers, protect you, and I shall also pray for you.”

After receiving a close blessing from his teacher, Lama Ole replied: “I’ll tell you what Hannah and I always did when we got so much praise from a noble quarter, which we didn’t often get, but which is very nice to have, thank you. We said: ‘We promise to work harder.’ Is that useful? Will you accept that? Thank you.”
