The International Round Table regarding “Past and contemporary lay Buddhism” was taken place on January 18, 2014

On January 18, 2014 in Sankt-Petersburg the Russian Diamond Way Karma Kagyu Buddhists Association and its Sankt-Petersburg Diamond Way Buddhist Centre held the International Roundtable regarding “Past and contemporary lay Buddhism”. It has taken place on the Liteyny Avenue, 55 within the 5th festival “Buddhism.ru”.

Chairman: A.S. Kolesnikov, Doctor of Financial Science, professor of the St. Petersburg State University.

Coordinator: V.M. Dronova, chief scientific officer of the Russian Diamond Way Karma Kagyu Buddhists Association.

“Past and contemporary lay Buddhism” is very important subject in Russia nowadays, therefore it was a main topic of the panel discussions during this Roundtable, as long as many people from the West, including Russia, start practicing Lay Buddhism, which is a common practice in Tibet (along with monks, yogis).

Among the participants were the leaders of the largest Buddhist Sanghas in Sankt-Petersburg: A.Sh. Koybagarov, President of the Russian Diamond Way Karma Kagyu Buddhists Association, who spoke about Vajrayana meditation; a prior of the Datsan Gunzechoinei, who told about the experience working with lay people; K.B. Erofeev, D.Sc., a member of Sankt-Petersburg City Bar, who shared some religious and law details in Russia in the context of, Buddhism. The Conference was attended by scientists and philosophers – A.S. Kolesnokov, Dr.Ph., A.M. Alexeev-Apraksin DSc in Cultural Studies, E.A. Kiy, C. sc., G.E. Serebryannyi, a reader in Stage Direction Department of the St. Petersburg State Theatre Arts Academy, covered the status of Lay Vajrayana Buddhism in Russia, in the West and Taiwan. The special guest from Novosibirsk, L.M. Korotezkaya, C. sc., and Y.V. Kuus, aspirant from IMBTS SB RAS in Ulan Ude, shared interesting results of her survey among Diamond Way followers, her goal was to find the reasons people become Buddhists and the ideas of happiness among them.

Dane Lama Ole Nydahl spoke about “Mahamudra – the Great seal nowadays”.

Among the participants were scientists, Buddhist practitioners from Sankt-Petersburg, Moscow and many other cities, including Germany, Poland, Finland and Ukraine, St. Petersburg business leaders and media. The Indian Consul Mr. Amar Kant Dan honored this meeting with his presence, he was accompanied by A.A. Grigoriev, assistant to the Indian consul-general in St. Petersburg.

It was a special academic and research event. The Roundtable reports will be published as a part of a conference with eponymously-named topic. It is scheduled as a part of the fourth International Research and Practice Conference “Vajrayana Buddhism in Russia: traditions and innovations”, whish will take place on September 23-26, 2014 in Elista (Republic of Kalmykia).
